Project’s Goal: Expanding Inclusive Education Strategies in the Lake Region.
The Girls Education Challenge Transition Project (GEC –T) is a 5-year (2017 – 2022) project funded by UKAID and is implemented by a consortium of organizations (Leonard Cheshire, Cheshire Disability Services Kenya, Ability Africa Foundation and Social Impact Institute) with interventions at the primary, secondary and vocational level focusing on girls living with disabilities.
The project goal is to improve the life chances of girls living with disabilities through enabling learning, transition and sustainability of interventions. In this project, Cheshire Disability Services Kenya (CDSK) in partnership with Leonard Cheshire is implementing the secondary school level interventions focusing on teacher development, adapting the learning environment, provision of school fees subsidies / scholastic kits and capacity building of girls living with disabilities in 25 beneficiary secondary schools in the Lake Region namely: Kisumu East, Siaya, Mbita, Migori and Kuria East Sub-Counties.
The project has so far reached 667 learners (600 boys 67 Girls), 304 teachers directly trained on inclusive Education approaches, 172 were reached by the teacher mentorship program, and 75 Board of management members were trained on resource mobilization, Governance, and Inclusive Education practices by Kenya Education Management Institute (KEMI).154 Learners have transitioned to other higher learning institutions.
- Social & Financial Education Project
The Social & Financial Education Project uses Aflatoun Model to socially and economically empower children and youngsters with disabilities to act as agents of change in their own lives and for a better world.
The project is being implemented in Makueni and Siaya County and targets primary school children with disabilities between the ages of 10 to 17 years, teachers and other relevant stakeholders in the education and finance sector.
Herein, facilitators/teachers are trained on Aflatoun’s active-learning methods based on the Non-Formal Education (NFE) Aflatoun Curriculum which is part of the global networks of Aflatoun whereas children and youngsters with disabilities are taught about relevant life skills, financial education and entrepreneurship skills. This will enable them have a voice, participate in social and economic activities of their households and communities, while at the same time, influencing change at community and national level as future leaders.
- Improvement of Learning Environment for People with Disabilities at Tangaza University College (TUC).
Project’s Goal: To improve the learning environment for PWDs at TUC and beyond
The project strives to create a conducive learning environment to enable students with disabilities to live a “near normal” life on campus where they can study, live, operate independently and thrive.
The project expected outcomes include:
- Persons with Disabilities to enjoy the same opportunities as other students and staff in accessing the built environment and services at TUC.
- Staff, lecturers, and students to demonstrate competency and a change of attitude and behaviour in inclusive practice.
- TUC to be the University of Choice – All inclusive.
- TUC to be a model of other universities in Africa when it comes to Disability mainstreaming.
- Students, lecturers, and staff change of attitude and behavior.
- Improved in research and publication of disability studies.
